Sock It To Me!

All This Week's Warren, Watchung, Green Brook & Long Hill Kid Activities

By Roseann Sicola, Macaroni Kid Warren October 23, 2014
I've mentioned before that we have sock issues in my house.  We keep all the boys' socks in a basket by the back door.  No one has socks in their dressers, and the basket is basically a free-for-all of sizes, colors and styles.  You get what you get, and if you're lucky, they match. Since my 4-year old has taken to picking holes in his socks while he's watching tv, matches are getting few and far between. When the basket is down to a couple of baby socks and a lost yo-yo, that's my clue that it's time to do some laundry.  The only problem is, they are never in the hamper.  Instead, they are in the playroom, between the couch cushions, under the beds, and stuffed into last week's soccer shoes.  Since there is no way I am going to track down all those socks, I tell the boys it's time for a sock hunt and off they go, like drug-sniffing dogs, finding socks in places no socks should never be.  Their motivation?  5 cents per sock. The only qualifier is they have to actually be dirty.  They can't be clean socks from the upstairs laundry basket that are patiently awaiting their long-lost mates.  It is quite the competition, and there is lots of jostling to see who finds the most.  It occurred to me the other day that what I'm actually doing is rewarding them for leaving their dirty socks all over the house. Oh well, at least we get clean socks in the end so I'll fight that battle another day.

(PS - for those of you who were wondering, I did make that Jedi cloak this past weekend and I feel like a ROCK STAR! And no, the Halloween Costume Fairy did not show up despite my offering of candy corn and Mountain Dew.)
