Video Killed the Mom Brain

All This Week's Warren, Watchung, Green Brook & Long Hill Kid Activities

By Roseann Sicola, Macaroni Kid Warren August 22, 2014
We used to do all kinds of crafts around here, with feathers and googley eyes, gems and pompoms, glitter and glue.  A 40 percent off sale at Michaels on those buckets of foam stickers was one of my favorite events.  What happened? Wii happened.  The kids got it for Christmas and it took away all my creativity.  During the school year, Wii is only allowed on the weekends, but this summer the only restriction has been that the baby has to be napping, which means that every afternoon when they aren't in camp, my three addicts have been camped out in the living room, remotes attached to their hands.  I have made some other rules.  They are supposed to do their reading and worksheets before the Wii goes on, and there is a timer but beyond that, they've had free reign. Yes, I know.  Bad, bad, bad, too much screen time, bad parent. But in return I've gotten quiet afternoons to read, work on MacKid, and nap.  Now you're jealous, right?  The downside, though, is a craft room bursting with long-forgotten craft supplies and a mom brain that can't seem to remember what we use all this glitter for!  Soon we'll be back in school and the Wii will go back to a weekend-only activity, but I'm not sure I can re-inspire us to crack open the craft supplies.  I'm still good for an occasional Pinterest-inspired activity myself, but I don't see my little men getting excited over art projects like they did before they knew about Mario Cart and Star Wars games.  Maybe when we're on our 25th snow day this winter they will get tired of the Wii and beg for foam stickers.  Hey, it could happen!

We're sneaking in one last vacation next week, so there won't be a new newsletter.  I'll see you all on the first day of school!
