Save the Watchung Library - Rally on Friday, June 27 at 10am!

$1.30-a-Week to Keep Our Library!

By Roseann Sicola, Macaroni Kid Warren June 26, 2014
Macaroni Kid is all about helping you keep your kids busy, so it is a no-brainer that we are big supporters of libraries.  Our local libraries provide educational and free programs for our kids, and all of us moms and dads know how important that is, especially in today's economy.  So I am happy to spread the word to save the Watchung Library.

On July 17, the Borough Council will be deciding on the fate of the Watchung Library, which is overcrowded and in need of repair.  One of the options before the Council is closing the Watchung Library. Other options being considered are renovating the current library or rebuilding a new library with a community center.

The cost of renovation or rebuilding is estimated to be 4 million dollars, which would be paid for with a 40-year bond.  The cost to Watchung families would be about $67 per year, which is only $1.30 per week - less than a cup of Starbucks!!

The Friends of the Watchung Library are kicking off the $1.30-a-Week Campaign to save the Watchung Library this Friday, June 27, at 10am at Borough Hall.  All Watchung families and their kids are encouraged to come to Borough Hall on Friday with $1.30 to show the Council that we want to keep our Library!  Bring your piggy banks or your Buzz Lightyear wallets!

If you can't make it to the rally, stop by the Library with your $1.30 every week until July 17th and that money will be forwarded to the Council.  You can also send your $1.30 each week to Borough Hall along with your name and address and note saying "This is my share toward a new library for the week of ___________."  If you write a check, make it payable to the "Watchung Community Fund" with "Watchung Library" in the memo.

Keeping the Watchung Library open is very important issue to me.  I have sentimental reasons, having grown up in Watchung spending many, many hours at the Watchung Library, and I want my children to have the same experience and love for the Library that I developed.  Beyond the sentiment, though, is the fact that the Watchung Library is an integral part of the fabric of the Watchung community.  I believe that the Library has value that goes beyond the cost, and that the cost is minimal compared to the value it brings to our small town.  Yes, Watchung has many needs and priorities to consider, but the Library must be one of them.  My boys and I will be at the Kick-Off rally tomorrow, and I hope you will be there too.
