"Stained Glass" Leaf

By Roseann Sicola, Warren Macaroni Kid November 4, 2010

I love this easy craft because the end result is just so pretty!  My son made one of these at preschool last year and I still have it in our window!  You can do this craft two different ways, depending on the supplies you have at hand.

What you need:

  • Different colored tissue paper, cut into 1-inch squares
  • Construction paper
  • Waxed paper OR Contact paper
  • Glue
  • Scissors

What to do:

Cut a large leaf shape out of the middle of the construction paper, leaving a leaf-shaped hole in the paper - you can trace a leaf shape from a large cookie cutter or do it freehand.

Cut a piece of contact paper or waxed paper to apply to the back of the construction paper.  The piece should be large enough to cover the leaf-shaped hole, and in the case of waxed paper, large enough to apply glue to in order to attach it to the construction paper.

Turn the construction paper back over.  Take the tissue paper and apply it to the part of the contact paper or the waxed paper which is visible through the leaf-shaped hole.  If using waxed paper, use a very thin layer of glue on the tissue paper to attach it.  Put enough tissue paper squares on to cover most or all of the leaf-shaped hole.

If you're using waxed paper, you're done!  If you're using contact paper, apply another piece of contact paper the size of the construction paper to the front of the construction paper, then you're done!

Hang in your window so the sun can shine through and you'll have a brightly colored "leaf" even when all the leaves are gone!
