Fruit Water

By Melinda Lodge Willis, Macaroni Kid Publisher Mom July 27, 2011

This recipe is so incredibly easy that you'll think as I did, "why haven't I done this before?" It's a staple in my friend Maria's Mexican household, as well as in many Mexican eateries and road side stands.   The recipe is only fruit, water, and sugar, so it is as simple as can be!

Experiment with the 'leftover' fruit in your house.  I have made versions of this drink several times and it has been refreshing and delicious each time.  I love that it is a nutritious and fresh change from pouring something from a store bought container.  You can mimic the below recipe with almost any fruit.  Maria had me try the following -  papaya, mango, watermelon, cantaloupe, papaya/mango, and hibiscus flower.  Yes, hibiscus!  This one tasted the most exotic, and it is admittedly one that I have not tried in my own household.  Enjoy!

Ingredients

1/2 watermelon seeded and diced

3/4 cup sugar

6 cups water

You can take the watermelon down much closer to the rind than you usually do.  Add watermelon, water, and sugar to blender.   Blend down to water consistency, and serve in ice filled glass.  Delicious!

If you put it in a sippy cup or similar for your kids, remember that there are no preservatives, so don’t keep it out too long without refrigeration!
